Why You Should Configure Multiple Backup Methods
Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is an effective way to protect your accounts - but it only works well if you plan for recovery. Having multiple backup methods ensures you stay secure and maintain access, especially during common scenarios like getting a new phone. Setting up more than one MFA method, (e.g., Microsoft Authenticator, backup codes) is critical for reliability and access.
Avoid Account Lockouts
If your primary method fails (e.g., you lose your phone or can't receive texts), a backup method ensures you can still log in without needing IT support or account recovery delays.
Best Practice Recommendations
- Set up at least two methods (e.g., Authenticator app, phone, email)
- Generate and safely store backup/recovery codes
- Regularly review and update your MFA settings (especially after device changes)
- Use a Multifactor Authenticator when possible
