Merging Previous Gradescope User Accounts

OBJECTIVE

Gradescope has an issue handling email addresses, resulting in duplicate accounts for individuals accessing Gradescope from Blackboard Learn course sites after adopting an email alias. This issue arises the first time they launch Gradescope from Blackboard Learn after obtaining the alias.

PREREQUISITE

The following guidance applies specifically to students, faculty, and staff for whom all of the following conditions apply:

  • A person has recently established an email alias that is associated with their Drexel University UserID.
  • A person has access to one or more BlackBoard Learn course sites that use the Gradescope online assessment tool.
  • A person accessed Gradescope from their BlackBoard Learn course site before obtaining an email alias.
  • A person attempted to launch Gradescope from within BlackBoard Learn and encountered an error.

What is an email alias?

An email alias is an email address that is more user-friendly or readable than the user's original UserID-based email address. An email address alias is adding an additional name to the account rather than changing the email account address. Example: Andy Bobby Clark may have a UserID of abc123 and their email address is abc123@drexel.edu. Andy may request an email alias Andy.Clark@drexel.edu (if it is available). After setup, the email alias is setup the emails will enter Andy’s university email inbox.

For more information on email alias requests please view: https://drexel.edu/it/about/policies/tos/accounts-email/.

After establishing an email alias, people who already have an account with Gradescope under their Drexel University UserID, will encounter an error message similar to the one below when launching Gradescope from within a BlackBoard Learn course site (either via a Gradescope assignment or the Gradescope link in the BlackBoard Learn course navigation menu).

For Anyone with a Duplicate Account

For those who have recently adopted email aliases but haven't accessed Gradescope through BlackBoard Learn, please refer to the following instructions below:

  1. Click on the link in the error message. (NOTE: If you inadvertently dismissed the error message, click on the ‘Account’ icon in the lower left-hand corner of the screen, then select ‘Edit Account’ from the menu displayed and skip to Step 4.)
  2. A pop-up window will appear requiring your Gradescope account password before merging your Gradescope accounts. (NOTE: This is NOT your Drexel account password. Usually, individuals do not have Gradescope passwords set up. For those without one, it is necessary to create a Gradescope password.)
  3. To add a password to the Gradescope account, click the ‘Cancel’ button to return to the ‘Edit Account’ page.
  4. When the ‘Account Settings’ page loads, create a password in the ‘Password’ and ‘Password Confirmation’ fields and click the ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom of the page. (NOTE: This password should NOT be the same as the password associated with your Drexel UserID.)
  5. When the "Add New Email Address" pop-up window reappears, enter your new Gradescope password in the space provided and click the "Add Email" button.
  6. After entering your password, the Account Settings page will refresh to show that a confirmation email has been sent to the newly registered email address
  7. Confirm your email address received an email from Gradescope. Once you've located the email, click on the link provided within it.
  8. Once you've clicked the link provided in the email, you will be directed to Gradescope. Once there, you will receive a confirmation message, informing you that the account merging process was successful.
