Accounts and Access

Personal ChatGPT accounts may continue to be used for non-Drexel activities.

Once an @drexel.edu email address has been added to the ChatGPT Edu workspace, ChatGPT does not provide the option for changing the email address of an existing personal ChatGPT account that uses a Drexel email, nor can you transfer data from a Drexel-associated account to one with a non-Drexel email. If you previously signed up for ChatGPT using your Drexel email, you will be prompted to:

  • Transfer your existing chat history into the Drexel Edu workspace, or
  • Export and delete your existing chat history, then start fresh under the enterprise license.
ChatGPT Edu Workspace Options

Each option has trade-offs:

  • If you have only Drexel-related work in the original ChatGPT account, it makes sense to transfer it to the Drexel workspace so that you continue that work without having to recreate or redo any of it.
  • If you have only personal work in the ChatGPT account and want to keep it separate from the Drexel workspace, export the data to start your ChatGPT Edu account with a blank slate. Download the export file, open a personal ChatGPT account under a non-Drexel email address, and load the file that was exported earlier. ChatGPT will load all of your history into one “mega-chat” rather than restoring individual chats. Keep the file in case ChatGPT eventually gets an import tool that can better recreate your old account history.
  • If you have a mix of Drexel-related and personal data in your existing account, you’ll have to decide which idea is better for you: continuing your work with the least friction or keeping your personal data personal.

Our Recommendation:

To maximize your options, we recommend exporting your current account data and responding to the prompt shown above. This way, even if you merge the data into the Drexel account, you can reload the export file into a new personal account. If you see the prompt, just open another browser tab and sign in to ChatGPT as you did before Drexel assigned you an account; then follow ChatGPT’s instructions to export your data.  It is also strongly recommended to review your chat history and delete any sensitive or personal conversations or data that you do not want associated with your Drexel account in the Edu workspace. When in doubt about whether you'll need something later, export, screenshot, or download and decide later! This ensures you retain anything important, as changes may be irreversible after migration.

Please note: Once migrated, all data will be governed by Drexel’s enterprise agreement and managed under your Drexel account. Data cannot be exported again, so if you end your affiliation with Drexel University, access to this data will be removed upon separation.
