Drexel IT Information Security recommends these technology, information security, and privacy recommendations while traveling.
Plan your travel
1. Don't travel with it, if you won't need it
If you think you won't need something, don't take it with you. This reduces the risk of data and devices being compromised, lost, or stolen.
2. Back up/save data
Back up/save your data to a different location or to the cloud. Save Drexel related data to your Drexel OneDrive. Do not take the backed-up data with you.
3. Antivirus and anti-malware
Install current versions of antivirus and anti-malware programs on your devices.
4. Complex passwords
Use complex passwords on your accounts. Use a combination numbers, upper-and lower-case letters, and special characters, at least 8 characters long.
6. Register your travel
Register your travel with the Office of International Travel. To see if you are required to register your travel, either refer to GRAND or email intltravreg@drexel.edu.
While traveling
1. Secure Internet connection
Connect using the Drexel VPN or Eduroam hotspot with your Drexel credentials to connect to when visiting other participating institutes globally. See eduroam.us for details.
- Your device is lost or stolen
- You suspect a breach of sensitive or regulated data
- You suspect your account or device has been compromised
3. Do not:
- Discuss sensitive information in public
- Leave your devices unattended
- Use charging stations—use a wall outlet and your own charging cables or external batteries
- Open emails or attachments from unknown sources or click on any links in emails
- Automatically connect to unknown networks and devices, so make sure to turn off the "automatically connect" setting on your devices
When you return
1. Review accounts
Look for any unauthorized transactions or activity in all your accounts, such as your banking and credit card.
2. Change your passwords
Change your Drexel password and other account passwords you accessed while traveling overseas.
3. Antivirus and anti-malware scans
Perform antivirus and anti-malware scans on your devices.
