SUMMARY
Some Drexel community members created personal ChatGPT accounts using their @drexel.edu email address before Drexel launched its ChatGPT Edu workspace. Because OpenAI locks accounts that use a verified institutional domain, these users normally cannot change their account email address.
To support users who want long‑term access to their ChatGPT content, Drexel University will temporarily de‑verify the @drexel.edu domain for a 10‑day window, during which affected users will be able to change their ChatGPT account email address to a personal one, provided that personal email does NOT already have an associated ChatGPT account.
This article explains how the process works, what users must do during the 10‑day window, and what happens afterward.
Why You Normally Cannot Change Your Email Address
OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform treats any account using a verified institutional domain (such as @drexel.edu) as an enterprise‑domain account. When a domain is verified:
- The email address on the account becomes locked
- Users cannot change it to a personal email
- Drexel cannot unlock or modify the address
- OpenAI does not offer manual exceptions
This restriction applies even if the account is not licensed or provisioned in Drexel’s ChatGPT Edu workspace.
TEMPORARY 10-DAY EMAIL-CHANGE WINDOW
To support users who created personal ChatGPT accounts with their Drexel email, Drexel University will temporarily de‑verify the @drexel.edu domain for 10 days.
What This Means For You
During this 10‑day period:
- Users with personal ChatGPT accounts using @drexel.edu will be able to change their account email address to a personal, non‑Drexel address.
- This is the only time the email‑change option will be available.
- Once the domain is re‑verified, the restriction returns and email addresses will again be locked.
What You Must Do
If you want to keep your personal data separate and have access to your personal ChatGPT account after leaving Drexel:
- Sign in to your ChatGPT account during the 10‑day window.
- Go to Settings > Account.
- Change your email address to a personal one, such as Gmail, Outlook, or iCloud.
- Confirm the change via the verification email sent to your new address.
If you do not complete this step during the 10‑day window, you will not be able to change your email later.
What Happens After the 10‑Day Window
When Drexel re‑verifies the domain:
- Email‑change ability is disabled again
- Accounts using @drexel.edu become locked to that address
- Users who did not update their email will lose access when their Drexel account closes
- SSO auto‑routing will resume for accounts inside the Edu workspace
There are no lasting changes to the workspace or user accounts beyond the email changes users make during the window.
If You Are Leaving Drexel
If your Drexel email will be deactivated:
- You will lose access to your ChatGPT account tied to that email.
- You will lose access to chat history, custom GPTs, and saved files.
- OpenAI cannot transfer your data after your Drexel account closes.
If you cannot or do not want to change your email during the 10‑day window, you should export your data.
Exporting now helps ensure you don’t lose anything important if you later merge data into your Drexel ChatGPT Edu account once the domain is reverified, and it preserves the option to reload that data into a new personal account later.
How to Export Your ChatGPT Data
- Sign in at chat.openai.com.
- Go to Settings > Data Controls.
- Select Export Data.
- Download the file sent to your email.
This export includes your chat history, files, and custom GPT configurations.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can Drexel or OpenAI change my email address for me?
No. Only the user can change their email, and only during the 10‑day de‑verification window.
What if I miss the 10‑day window?
You will not be able to change your email address later. You should export your data before your Drexel account closes.
Does this affect users inside the ChatGPT Edu workspace?
During the 10 day window, account users will be prompted to receive a one‑time, six‑digit passcode sent to their Drexel email that they will enter to complete sign‑in. This does not affect ChatGPT Edu features, data protections, or your license. Users will still have access to all chat histories, GPT's and projects created. After this 10‑day period, normal Drexel Connect single sign‑on will be restored.
What do I do if I am unable to change my ChatGPT account email address to a personal one?
It is likely that the personal email you tried to change your ChatGPT account to is already associated with another ChatGPT account. Emails and ChatGPT accounts are one to one. This means that once an email address has been used in any capacity to create a ChatGPT account with OpenAI, it CANNOT be used again. If this is the case, try to change to a different email address of your choosing or create a new email address that the ChatGPT account can be associated with. If that still does not work, contact Drexel IT Help Desk via ChatGPT Edu Support.
