OVERVIEW OF SERVICE

Canvas is managed by the Office of Information Technology and is fully integrated with the DrexelOne Portal and the Banner Student Information System (SIS). Instructors of Fall Quarter 2025-26 courses and beyond can leverage this new LMS. For Fall 2026-27 terms, Canvas will be the default Learning Management System (LMS). At some future point, all course sections will be created in Canvas each term such that they are freely available for faculty to activate and use. Enrollment data is automatically fed in, making this an easy-to-use solution for faculty to engage their students.

DESCRIPTION & FEATURES

COURSE MANAGEMENT TOOLS

  • Assignments - a secure location for students to submit work
  • Content Editor - add and format text, insert equations, hyperlinks, tables, and images
  • Discussions - allow members of the class to communicate asynchronously with one another
  • Gradebook - centralized area for grading, tracking student progress, and generating reports
  • Tests - assess student knowledge and measure progress

INTEGRATED WITH CANVAS

  • Ally - automatically generate alternate formats of content and provides feedback to faculty about the accessibility of their course content
  • Kaltura/Drexel Streams - streaming media system that allows for integration of videos, with quizzing, into a course
  • Respondus - secure the online testing environment and create learning objects
  • Turnitin - check students' work for improper citation or potential plagiarism
  • VoiceThread - allow users to create presentations, add audio and/or video narration and allow others to comment on them

ACCESS

Access to the system is available to all users through direct signin. Drexel faculty and students can access their Canvas courses directly from DrexelOne.

SUPPORTED BROWSERS

The latest versions of all modern browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari) work with Canvas.

There can be differences in the ways that individual browsers behave and render content, so it is recommended to have at least two browsers available in case issues arise. More information about supported browsers is available on the Canvas Community site.

Add Users to Closed Canvas Courses
In order to add a user to a course that is currently closed in Canvas, the Teacher will need to re-open the course before they can process that enrollment change.
Copy Course Content
Faculty have the ability to import content they used in a previous Canvas course into their upcoming course, but should consult with their college, school, or department support for proper guidance.
Enroll Teaching Assistants
Faculty who are assigned as Teachers for Canvas courses have the ability to add Teaching Assistants and Designers to their course.
Extend Course Dates
Faculty have the ability to change their course dates in Canvas so that students can access the course early or retain access beyond the end of the term.

The Drexel Canvas Course Template is a starter kit for faculty to help them build out their course within Canvas.
