Add Users to Closed Canvas Courses

Summary

In order to add a user to a course that is currently closed in Canvas, the Teacher will need to re-open the course before they can process that enrollment change.

Body

When a course's end date has passed in Canvas, it is no longer possible to add users to the course on the People page. However, if you'd like to add users to a course after it has ended - perhaps to allow a new instructor to review course materials from a past term - you can still do so by modifying the course end date.

To add a user to a completed course in Canvas, the course's Teacher must:

  1. Re-open the course by accessing the course settings menu, changing the Participation setting to Course, and update the course end date to one in the future. Full steps on this process can be found in the Extend Course Dates article.

  2. Access the People page and add the necessary user(s) using the normal user enrollment process outlined on the Enroll Teaching Assistants article.

  3. Revisit the course settings page and set the course end date to a date in the past. This will re-close the course to prevent student access.
